Slot volatility: what it is and why it matters

Volatility is about how wins are spread out. With high volatility they come less often and some can be bigger; with medium volatility they are more evenly spread. It does not change what the game pays back in the long run: that is the RTP.
Two slots can pay back exactly the same and still feel very different to play. Most of the time, the difference is volatility.
What volatility is
It is how the game spreads its wins over time.
- High volatility: wins come less often, but some can be big. The balance swings up and down more.
- Medium volatility: wins are more evenly spread. Fewer swings, in either direction.
RTP tells you how much the game pays back on average, over a huge number of spins. Volatility tells you how it pays it back.
Same RTP, different volatility
These four Pragmatic Play slots all return the same: 96.50%. Three of them also share the same max win. And they do not play the same.
| Game | RTP | Max win | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 96.50% | 5,000x | Medium |
| Starlight Princess | 96.50% | 5,000x | Medium |
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% | 5,000x | High |
| Fruit Party | 96.47% | 5,000x | High |
Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush are the clearest example: same RTP and same ceiling, 5,000 times the bet. The difference is the path: in Sugar Rush, wins arrive more unevenly.
What changes in practice
- With high volatility you can go many spins without a big win. That is normal for this kind of game, not a sign that a win is "due".
- With medium volatility, wins tend to come more often and be smaller.
- Neither makes you win more. With the same RTP, the game keeps the same share in the long run.
If you play with real money, decide before you start how much you are willing to lose and do not go past it. With high volatility, that limit comes sooner than it seems.
Where the figure comes from
Pragmatic Play has printed the volatility on the welcome screen of its games since 2020. Older ones do not always show it: Wolf Gold, from 2017, does not, so its review leaves it blank rather than making it up.
Of the 14 Pragmatic games we cover, 8 are high volatility, 5 are medium and 1 does not publish it.
